What Is Bajo La Luna? Why is it important?

Bajo La Luna is a new platform for globally rooted, borderless songwriting- curated with care and presented in intentional, unique formats and grounded in the belief that music can be a site of belonging. Its first iteration kicks off magical and unique convening of three different-yet-connected artists from Spain, Colombia, and the US/Mexico at the incomparable Ford Theatre in Hollywood on August 31. It’s an experience (a ritual, really) that honors the tradition and transformative power of song- paying tribute to a legacy that blurs borders and connects all of us. Through fresh, inspired, and very different interpretations of the craft, Bajo La Luna brings together three acclaimed singer-songwriters- pillars of contemporary songwriting- in unique formats (another thing that Bajo La Luna will always strive to do) in a deeply-needed and urgent celebration of life, and of heritage as a living, evolving force.

As we’re in a particularly tense moment in the world and in our city, Bajo La Luna aims to create moments where everyone feels like they’re at home- in other words, honoring the legacy of Los Angeles as a place for everyone to dream and thrive and feel safe. It’s an urgent moment of reprieve as we sink into the last bits of Summer, and it’s a statement of soft resistance via the power of the ritual of song.

Who’s Playing?

La Muchacha (Colombia)

La Muchacha is a manifesto born directly from the tradition of Nueva CanciΓ³n in Latin America (protest song). Delving into the nuances of various Colombian rhythms, and layering her piercing-yet-sweet voice on top of it, La Muchacha’s songs have become anthem-like in Colombia. Exploring themes such as community resilience, environmental awareness, deep love, and beyond, La Muchacha has taken her captivating song around the world- bringing it to LA for the first time ever.

Y La Madrigal (aka Y La Bamba) (US/MΓ©xico)

Y La Madrigal is best known as the Portland-based project Y La Bamba led by the riveting Mexican-American singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza. Y La Bamba has seeped its way into ears globally for the larger part of nearly 2 decades, having been praised by everyone from NPR to Pitchfork. Oscillating between Spanish and English, incorporating elements of Luz’s musical upbringing in central California- from mariachi to corridos- their aching and mystical voice strings together an experience that will resonate with many angelenos- one that is multilingual, multi-genre, and borderless. Y La Madrigal is Y La Bamba in a format created specifically for Bajo La Luna- influenced by trios with a choral twist, featuring an 8-person choir, it’ll be one for the books.
